Celebrating the #sussextrug

Updated: Oct 3, 2020

Another print based on a sketch I did during #inktober back in 2016. I knew it would work well as a print - only took four years to happen!

I have had this trug for a very long time - many a basket full of freshly picked vegetables have been featured on Instagram.

Sussex Trugs date back to the 1500s and were commonly made around the Herstmonceux area of East Sussex, where materials were plentiful. They are made from a handle and rim of coppiced sweet chestnut, plus a base made from boards of cricket bat willow. The wood is is bent into shape and held with copper nails to avoid rust. #sussextrug #trug #trugbasket

I used my projection method to get the image onto the plywood and decided that a fair amount of colour was needed - I enjoyed creating the different combinations for the harvest of onions. #growyourownonions #redonions #onion

My sister Jo, who lives in Sussex, bought this print. I have had it framed in simple oak, but it has not quite made it to her house yet. This would make great gift for a gardener, better still a Sussex gardener! #wallart #artforgardeners #limitededition #handprinted #woodcut #ballardcreative
