Like most cats, Darwin likes to sleep. Usually on something. A piece of paper, a rug, a cushion, a chair, a bed, and increasingly on Stuart's lap.
The original image of him on a pile of cushions reminded me of the story of the Princess and the Pea. I gathered some reference and started working out a design. I love pattern, so enjoyed simplifying and deciding how I could capture the design of the fabrics with simple lines, just two colours and black.
I chose the pose with his legs coming forward because of the way his feet are jumbled together, the print was almost named 'Look at his Little Feet', but in the end I went for 'Cat that got the Cushion'.
My cushions are an eclectic mix - ranging from a Scandi classic in 'Siirtolapuutarha' fabric by Marimekko, one from Designers Guild and, more humbly, a ready-made cushion and one made from spare curtain fabric from Ikea.#marimekko #scandi #ikeacushion #ikeafabric
The timing of this worked well - Crumps Barn Studio in Cirencester were holding a Festival of Cats during February. It was great to be included, there was a intriguing selection of cat related art, books and poems on display. The exhibition attracted interest from the Wilts and Glos Standard, Cotswold Life and visitors alike. And Darwin was very pleased to be poster boy! #crumpsbarnstudio #crumpsbarnbooks
I was thrilled to sell two of my framed prints and it was lovely to see an Instagram post by cat lover Sarah Jenkinson from Hitchin showing the prints hanging happily on the wall in their new home. She said, "Our new feline prints are up! Thanks @katieballard28 & @crumpsbarnstudio, we love them 😻. We came to Cirencester for a weekend away and it did not disappoint. We were so pleased to stumble upon the festival of cats and your gorgeous prints" @sjjenkinson
Editions of the 'Cat that got the Cushion' print and greetings cards are available on my website, purrrfect for cat lovers!
